What are the advantages and disadvantages of wooden windows?

Wooden frames are relatively popular in homes, ordinary residential houses, bungalows, villas and apartments. Below are the reasons why wooden windows are the top choice:

Wooden windows are relatively flexible to match the architectural style of the house (traditional, minimalist, classic, etc.).

Looks natural aesthetically because it is made from natural ingredients

Able to withstand heat and cold from inside and outside

Depending on the type of wood, maintenance is not too difficult. Resistance to weather and termites depends on the type and quality of wood.

But of course there are also disadvantages:

It is not very easy to find good quality wood.

The whole house must be prepared in such a way that it is anti -termite.

Requires periodic maintenance such as coating as an anti-fungal layer

Even though it is heat resistant, continuous exposure to high temperatures can cause changes in the volume of the wood so that at certain times it will make the windows difficult to open.

If the quality of the wood is not good, then it will not last long because it is not strong enough to withstand the workload.

Wood paint should also be weather resistant, otherwise it will quickly look dull and damaged.

What types of wood are suitable for windows?

Teak wood is always the first to be mentioned for the best quality wood. However, many other woods are also of good quality such as Samarinda camphor or mahogany. Underneath there are other woods such as Medan camphor and meranti.

Teak wood

Teak wood is famous not only for its beautiful texture, but also for its stability and durability. Because of that it is often the main choice of building material for wood lovers. In addition, teak wood is also proven to be termite resistant because of its natural oil content which makes it unique and unmatched by other types of wood, especially teak is a premium type of wood that only grows well in Southeast Asia.

The quality of teak wood is also determined by the finishing application. In addition to protecting wood from external exposure, it also determines its aesthetic value by highlighting the advantages and even the quality of the wood. Because it is not easily weathered, teak is relatively easy to care for. The presence of oil content also makes teak water resistant. The thick fiber also makes it easier for processing processes such as cutting and engraving.

Camphor wood

It is a cheap alternative because of its fine fiber, suitable for panel doors and windows. The durability of camphor wood is categorized in class II, while its durability is in class III. Even though they are of the same type, the camphor from Samarinda is finer in fiber than the Kalimantan camphor, so the price is more expensive. Apart from Samarinda camphor, there are also lime camphor and singkil camphor.

Meranti wood

The color is good, dark red to pink although not as pale as white meranti. The drawback is the high water content so it is recommended to be in the oven, especially since the expansion and shrinkage is stable. However, the pores and fibers are still relatively large. Not recommended for outdoors because it is not weather resistant. However, this can be tricked by finishing with duco paint or synthetic oil.

Marine resin wood/yellow balau

Durable and strong, stronger than camphor wood, unfortunately sometimes it cracks so you have to use filler to close the hole. Often used for heavy construction such as roofs. Sometimes used for windows but not recommended for doors due to weight.

Merbau wood

Can be an option after teak because it is quite hard and stable, also insect-resistant. It has dotted line fibers and is dark in color. This wood is actually gummy so it is more suitable for furniture.

Sungkai wood

The wood grain is beautiful and smooth, but its size is relatively small so it is only suitable for frames, especially for windows.

How much do wooden windows cost?

Of course the price offered depends on the area where you are, the wood material and the dimensions of the wood. Some shops may offer lower prices for using recycled or used wood. The average price for wooden window frames is as follows:

What paint is best for wooden windows?

There are several types of paint that can be applied to wooden windows, namely:

Oil paint: Covers the surface of wooden window frames perfectly. The choice of colors is very much so that it can be matched to the taste and style of your home. The application is very easy and fast.

Lubricants: Specially used to coat frames that have unique and attractive fibers because their main purpose is to highlight the natural texture of the material. Suitable for outdoors because it withstands direct sunlight.

Deco: Almost the same as oil paint, the difference lies in the way it is done. Duco needs to be applied by spraying so it takes longer.

Melamine: Similar to polish, but can only be used indoors. Its application is by spraying, so it can penetrate more into the wood fiber.

PU (polyurethane): Not much different from melamine but can only cover the surface of the wood and can't absorb to the inside. The application is the same, namely by spraying.

The window is one of the important accesses to the outside of the house, so it must be adapted to the whole building both from the exterior and interior. Make sure your choice is right by consulting the experts. If you want to enjoy a beautiful view of the sky, consider installing skylights.
