The bedroom - A place of peace

We all seek the same thing in our bedroom - for it to be a sanctuary that insulates us from the wear and tear of our daily lives and a pleasant and refreshing place where we can recharge our batteries. But, as one of the most private rooms in our house, it is also a place where we can reflect our individual preferences, in order to create the perfect setting that allows us to enjoy a happy and restful sleep.

How do I design my bedroom?

Of course, there is no single correct answer in this regard but, before weighing several ideas; we must first take into account the size and shape of the space, as well as the style of our home. For example, a country-style bedroom is unlikely to work very well in a small modern apartment. Then there is the question of our own needs: are we a light sleeper and do we need a very relaxed atmosphere or, on the contrary, do we find it difficult to wake up in the morning and need a very bright and cheerful room? We should ask ourselves these types of questions, since they could influence when deciding how to make a makeover to our room.

Tips for decorating:

The bed is the central point of the bedroom. Place it on the side of the window; so the light won't bother you. However, before buying it, you have to consider that the place where you are going to place it has -at least- 40 cm free on each side for the nightstands.

Another important element is the closet. If you have enough space, you can leave a whole wall to place it. If you don't want the environment to appear visually overloaded, buy it white and not too tall. In addition, you could complement with a dresser, always useful to have easier access to your clothes. As for its doors, we recommend that they be sliding; they are a little more expensive but you will gain in space. However, if you choose a wardrobe with hinged doors, consider that you should leave about 80 cm free so that it can be opened comfortably.

What type of soil should I put in?

Wooden floors can give the bedroom a clean and spacious feeling, but unless we have underfloor heating, putting a carpet is the best option, considering that we will walk barefoot at least once in a while. Another point to consider is that, if we are a light sleeper or live in a rather noisy neighborhood at night, carpets help to muffle sounds, but wooden floors do not. That said, a middle ground can always be achieved by enabling areas of the floor in which wood prevails and others in which there are soft rugs on which our bare feet can walk freely.

What kind of accessories should I use?

Textiles are our main allies to bring warmth and color to our bedroom. Bet on cushions of different sizes and shapes and place a plaid on the bed. You will want to spend more time inside than outside! When it comes to curtains, opt for lightweight, light-colored fabrics so that as much light as possible gets in and visually increases the space. And remember: do not shorten them at ground level. Now it takes to leave about 30 cm of more so that they are more "baggy".

How can I furnish a small double bedroom?

Before opting for a certain style of decoration, it is vital to use the measuring tape and see what size our bed should be so that it fits without much effort and at the same time leaves us enough space to walk around the room. Magnolia colors, light furniture, mirrors and landscape photographs help to fool our eyes, making the room visually larger and more spacious. We must look for multipurpose furniture that hides clutter in an orderly and creative way because, in addition, they provide a touch of fun.

White bedrooms

A white bedroom guarantees 100% serenity, and it is also a safe option if we are decorating a home that we plan to sell in the near future. We can introduce some subtle variations on that white canvas, playing with different shades of magnolia and cream or resorting to a wide range of textures when choosing accessories: cotton sheets and pillows that contrast with a knitted bedspread, for example; or a shiny dresser that counteracts the effect of a soft carpet. In this way, a normal white room can become a much more original room.

What colors and type of wallpaper should I use?

If we have trouble falling asleep at night, perhaps we should resort to neutral tones - they help us relax - combined with soft lighting. If, on the other hand, we find it difficult to get one foot out of bed in the morning, then it would be a good idea to opt for a bright and cheerful color that makes us start the day with energy. Pale hues can be used to create a greater sense of space in a small bedroom, but if the room is cold or facing north, blue-grays should be relegated in favor of warmer tones. If we choose wallpapers with dense motifs or garish colors, we could disturb the relaxed atmosphere of our room, so it is better if we stick to more calm and subtle designs.

How can I isolate the room from street noise?

One of the disadvantages of living in an apartment in the city is its high exposure to outside noise. And, if yours is a neighborhood with a lot of nightlife, surely you have spent more than one night awake. If you want a more effective alternative to buying ear plugs, we advise you to opt for acoustically insulating the walls and windows of your bedroom.

Although it is always appropriate to consult a professional, if you are a handyman you can carry out the reform yourself by following the following steps:

Insulation of the walls

First, remove the baseboards and plaster moldings, then place a viscoelastic sheet on all the walls of the room, making sure they are securely fixed with masking tape. Then, put metal profiles leaving an air chamber with the original enclosure (there you will introduce the insulation, you can use fiberglass, polyurethane, expanded polystyrene or mineral wool). Lastly, secure the new drywall to cover the walls.

Window insulation

Here there are two options: install a double window or place a double glazed thermal window. In the double windows, the panes must be at least 4 mm thick and, as for the second windows, there must be two panes with a dry air chamber several millimeters thick. In this case, it is necessary that the frame and the window are correctly joined, with elastic strips that block the passage of sound.

However, if you don't have a big budget or don't want to start construction at home, there are some very simple ideas to isolate your bedroom from outside sounds. For example, you can place a rug (preferably high wool or thick pile, as they are effective) or place large tubes of fabric with sponge or fiberglass in the corners of the room. In addition, if you like the back of the frames with this last material, you will also be able to reduce the noise considerably.

What are the most popular styles for the bedroom?

Modern bedrooms

To be fashionable and follow the latest trends, a modern bedroom Standard has to be bright and fresh, and in most cases it has a wooden floor, elegant cabinets and all its elements in order. If we are redecorating following this style, we will not be wrong if we opt for white walls, while the bedding and curtains should generally be in plain and neutral tones, avoiding strong patterns or colors. Furniture and accessories, such as lamps, should be discreet and practical, matching the overall pattern of the room. This is a style that most contemporary homes lend themselves to, making it practical and easy to achieve, as well as pleasing to the eye. However, it is necessary to bring the agenda up to date to keep that look again.

Rustic style bedrooms

The rustic style offers a relaxed, authentic and comfortable atmosphere. Complemented with stone and exposed beams, it is a style that brings out the best in older homes, but can also be used to give modern homes individuality and quirkiness. Ideally, it should give the impression that everything has been assembled in time, gradually, or that it has been inherited: a wrought iron bed, a flowered bedspread or tartan blanket, a chest of drawers that has been repainted or maybe a pile of old suitcases for storage. A fireplace with a log pile next to it will give the finishing touch to make our bedroom more chic.

Scandinavian style bedrooms

The Scandinavian style is characterized by clean lines, light woods and neutral tones - to the detriment of home touches - to create a serene and hospitable environment. Her favorite colors are soft: in shades of magnolia, grayish blues, and olive greens. The Scandinavian style is also associated with pine, since it usually brings freshness to this style of decoration, but you can also opt for bleached furniture or wood finishes. A ball of wool, a rocking chair or a wooden chest at the foot of the bed can help give the room an air of Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tales.
