Not all houses are made up
of double height ceilings and large windows allowing generous streams of
natural light to pass through. It sometimes seems to us that there is an
idea that a decoration or design project interior can only
succeed if the houses are equipped with these and other characteristics, but,
as we know, there are houses of all styles and with architectural details.
Which, although challenging, are manageable? In fact, architectural
specificity can be seen, in many cases, as opportunities and not as a handicap.
Today, we focus on a characteristic
that crosses many houses: low ceilings. Are they a seven-headed
bug? We have no doubt that, at times, they may seem, but today we bring
you some suggestions to make the low height of your ceilings work for you.
Proportions are everything. If
the ceilings in your apartment are low, choose furniture that is low for all
rooms. In this way, you will be able to create the visual illusion that
the ceilings are higher. By furniture, we understand, fundamentally, the
pieces that are usually bulky and heavy like the sofa and the beds. Small
pieces are not a problem at the outset. In addition to these furnishings
benefiting spaces with low ceilings, they are also extremely modern and convey
a huge sense of relaxation and comfort that brings us, to some extent, houses
where all pieces of furniture are low. It is worth remembering that, for
example, if you choose a low sofa, the coffee table must not exceed the height
of the seat, otherwise the set will not be harmonious.
Focus on built-in lights
Did you fall in love with a
long-shaped ceiling lamp or a sumptuous chandelier? If you live in an
apartment with low ceilings, you will have to favor other choices. One of
the best options for apartments with low ceilings is the LED spots embedded
in the ceiling. The LED spots are compact and discreet,
but they efficiently fulfill the function of homogeneously illuminating a
space. In addition, they are environmentally friendly and adapt to areas
of different styles.
Don't be afraid to use color
The design rules tell
us that white makes a space bigger, but if that space doesn't have a lot of
natural light, it won't happen. Privileging more cozy and warm tones is,
in many cases, preferable in a small area, and this idea also applies to spaces
with low ceilings. The living room we see above is proof of that. The
walls were painted in navy blue and the ceiling was left in white - which was
thus highlighted - thus creating a comfortable and elegant cocoon.
Divert attention to another point
When you enter this living room,
your gaze is immediately directed to the rustic stone wall that serves as a
backdrop for the suspended television panel. If you want to divert
attention from the fact that the ceilings in your apartment are low, create a
focal point in the space. The stone wall is an option, but you can use any
other material, such as wood and brick or use a
wallpaper. Basically, it is about creating a distraction in the
environment.
Create floor-to-ceiling storage
spaces
If the ceilings of your apartment
are low, then you should optimize the storage spaces as much as possible,
otherwise they will be scarce. Our suggestion is to invest in cabinets that
extend from the floor to the ceiling. This way, in addition to optimizing the space,
it still lends it vertical, making it look taller than it really is.
And why not a monochromatic
environment?
If the space benefits from good
natural light and is large, you can take a monochromatic approach. The use
of the same color on the walls and ceiling will generate a sense of continuity
that contradicts visual breaks. The color chosen does not necessarily have
to be white or another neutral tone.
In this image, it is also worth
highlighting the detail of the curtain with built-in frieze. The curtains
suspended on a rod placed lower end up cutting such verticality, which does not
favor apartments with low ceilings.
