Ladders

A staircase is an element designed to communicate spaces located at different heights. It is made up of steps or steps and may or may not have several sections separated by landings or landings. The stairs can be fixed or transportable, mobile. The latter are used, in general, to work or carry out some specific activity.

To avoid falls, a ladder must be climbed, if possible, maintaining a gentle rhythm and its slope must be constant. This means that the relationship between the depth of its steps, called the tread, and their height, called the riser, must be constant. A ladder that is too high but with little space for the length of the foot can be very difficult and even dangerous to go up or down, while a ladder with a lot of horizontal space, but little vertical, is a bit tedious when used.

A good rule of thumb for the design of a stair is that the average length of a step, each step, is between 59 and 68 cm long (figure that arises from the sum of the depth of the tread, plus twice the height of the riser), and that these are always the same on the same flight of stairs to avoid stumbling. Another issue is that, if possible, do not exceed 16 steps in each section.

Types of stairs

With the same objective but different designs, there are several options and types of stairs.

- Among the fixed ones, we find:

* Staircase of a section: the one that does not have breaks or turns.

* Staircase with landings or more than one section: one whose sections are separated by landings.

* Roundtrip staircase: the one that has its sections in two opposite directions.

* Square staircase: it has equal sections on four sides, already square.

* Spiral or spiral staircase: the one that is built with sections of ascending circular shape.

* Imperial staircase: it has one leg and two narrower back sections, lateral and parallel to the first.

* Stairway: a wide staircase, generally theatrical, artistic or monumental.

- Transportable ladders can be:

* Ladder: the traditional, portable one that we use at  home  for maintenance tasks.

* Chapera ladder: the one used by electricians or in construction works and which is made up of two inclined and parallel timbers on which some more or less wide crossbars are nailed.

* It should be ensured that at its ends some non-slip material has rubber.

* Stepladder or double: the one composed of two ladders joined at the top with hinges.

* Rope ladder: formed by two parallel ropes or ropes joined by several wooden or iron crossbars or bars in the form of steps.

* Most used in the field or rural areas.

* Scapular Ladder - A portable ladder used by miners on the wall of mine shafts.

Currently, and for a long time, there are also escalators or escalators generally used in public or commercial premises or institutions. In this case, its steps are mobile thanks to an electrical mechanism.

Designs and materials for stairs

The perfect ladder for each one will depend… on each one! Since in terms of designs and materials there are multiple options from which to choose and everything will depend on the budget, structural possibilities, style and personal taste. Consulting an interior architect can be useful and even recommended, sometimes, since he can advise on structural issues, especially.

The design and style will depend on the place where it will be located and the general style of the environment and the house. As for materials, they can be made in the classic and traditional such as wood, concrete, stone, different metals or even the most innovative or original such as glass, ceramics or a combination of several. It is advisable to avoid very slippery materials or, if they are used, treat them with an anti-slip product.

The use or placement of a railing or handrail is, of course, optional but also recommended if the design allows it.

Lighting on the stairs

It is very important to have good lighting on the stairs, not only for a decorative issue but, above all, for a safety issue. It is important to see well the steps where one steps so as not to stumble and fall. And this does not imply that there must be a light on permanently but the possibility of turning it on when it is used. Currently there are creative and aesthetic designs with light on the steps or on the railing.

Decoration for stairs

Decorators and interior designers can help you find your own decoration for that staircase that you already have or that you are going to build. The lighting always helps and is in itself a decorative element: you can hang, for example, some Christmas-like lights on the railing or hook them to the wall. You can play with the colors and paint it in a color that goes with the rest of the decoration. Or that the color and the intervention are in the part where the ladder rests and not in the ladder itself. There you can hang pictures, mirrors, photos or whatever your imagination allows. I toured Interior A to Z! You will surely find inspiration to make your staircase the perfect staircase.
